具分节段的双链RNA基因组的一类病毒。该科病毒分布极广，其中能使人、畜致病的主要成员有：轮状病毒、鸡传染性法氏囊病病毒、羊蓝舌病病毒、非洲马瘟病病毒等。病毒粒呈球形，大小在60～80纳米之间的20面体结构。有的已有疫苗可以预防。 
此类病毒的命名取其感染组织呼吸道和肠道二词的首字及表示病原性不明的（orphan孤儿）的首字连缀而成。即以 respiratory、
enteric和orphan各词的首字连缀一起为reo来命名的（A．B．Sabin，1959），全文是respiratory enteric
orphan vir-
us。病毒粒子为直径约70毫微米的正二十面体，结构单位共542个，但通常不能见到五聚或六聚型的壳微粒（capsomere）（共92个），多数具有
5―6个由3个结构单位组成的三聚体聚集在一起形成的结构（32个）。含有分子量为15?06的双链RNA。属于节肢介体病毒类。蓝舌病病毒和非洲马瘟
病毒也含有双链RNA，有的把它们放在一起称为双链核糖核酸病毒。RNA由10个亚基组成，各自相当于 1个顺反子。壳体内部含
